There’s a truly special place at the southernmost tip of Cádiz, in southern Spain. That place is called Tarifa.
Tarifa is a small city facing the African coast, with stunning sea views and wild, untamed beaches — including a spectacular sand dune. It serves as a key port connecting Spain and Morocco, separated only by a 14 km-wide strait.
The area is known for its constant winds, which may feel intense at times, but they’ve made of Tarifa the perfect place for kitesurfing and other extreme water sports.
Its historic centre is beautifully preserved, full of narrow white streets, lively bars, charming restaurants, and a relaxed (but never shabby) vibe. You’ll also find plenty of hippie chic fashion boutiques and surf shops. You won’t find Sotogrande-style luxury here, nor Marbella’s cosmopolitan flair — but Tarifa has something special: a contagious sense of freedom that you feel everywhere there.
The surrounding area offers amazing day trips: visit Bolonia Beach, the hilltop whitewashed village of Vejer de la Frontera, or even the British enclave of Gibraltar.
HOTELS
Every hotel in Tarifa has its own charm, with a mix of Andalusian and North African influences. Our recommendations:
Hurricane Tarifa – A small hotel full of charm, located just outside Tarifa but right by the sea. The lush gardens feel like something out of One Thousand and One Nights. There’s a beach bar, a restaurant serving local cuisine, and two pools. It’s not a luxury hotel, but it has a very special energy that can only be felt by staying there.
Tres Mares – Lovely architecture and an unbeatable location on Los Lances Beach.
The Riad – Right in the centre. Beautifully decorated in Moroccan style.
La Sacristía – Also in the centre. Fun, original and full of personality.
RESTAURANTS
Hurricane – The hotel’s own restaurant, offering simple, honest Mediterranean cuisine.
BiBo Tarifa – A fantastic blend of gourmet restaurant and beach bar, located on Valdevaqueros Beach.
El Francés – A legendary tavern in the heart of town, serving original and flavorful dishes in a laid-back atmosphere.
